About Me

I am a Durham, N.C.-based writer, editor, and researcher.

For seven years, I was the Director of the Teaching Case Writing Program of the Center for Strategic Philanthropy and Civil Society at the Sanford School of Public Policy, Duke University. Due to leadership transitions, the Center for Strategic Philanthropy has scaled back its operations, and I’m looking to transition to another position at Duke.

My extensive skills and experience would position me for success in communications, development, or project management.

As the lead communications person at the Center for Strategic Philanthropy and Civil Society, I designed its strategic communications plan, including the centerpiece of the strategy, the Center’s website.

In my seven years at the Center, I helped to raise much of the Center’s funding, including $1.5 million from the Packard Foundation, $900 thousand from the Hewlett Foundation, and $57 thousand from the Rockefeller Foundation. As part of my broader communications responsibilities, I helped to write and edit grant reports to those foundations and others, including Ford, Kresge, and Kellogg. While at UNC’s Frank Porter Graham Institute, I worked with the principle investigator in reporting to the U.S. Department of Education on her five-year, $5 million grant. I have extensive experience communicating formally and informally with funders about program activities.

From my position at the Center, I’ve developed expertise in how foundations and high-net-worth individuals think about grant-making. In writing case studies, I’ve interviewed dozens of foundation program officers and executives. I’ve also met and gotten to know countless other individuals in philanthropy and nonprofits at numerous high-level philanthropy conferences, including the Social Impact Exchange (of which my Center was a cosponsor), Social Capital Markets, the University of Southern California’s Philanthropy Leadership Forum, and the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council. I have a wealth of contacts within national philanthropies.

I’m a careful writer and editor with impeccable command of proper usage, grammar, syntax, punctuation, and style. I’m highly organized, I know how to do short- and long-term planning, and I’m able to focus on details and keep track of them without losing sight of the big picture.
